This year we will be working on the application of spelling rules. Many times, with traditional spelling lists, students memorize the words only to "lose" those conventions stored in short-term memory immediately following the test or quiz. Spelling is important. Spelling does count. As writers we are judged on our ability to accurately communicate, and that does include proper spelling. Therefore, we will be focusing on different spelling rules each month. Students will first explore words which follow the same conventions and derive the spelling rule which applies. The following days will be spent applying these rules in different spelling situations. This gives the student opportunities to correctly spell thousands of words, not just a list of twenty that are soon to be forgotten. All spelling rules are noted in the students Writer's Notebook.

 

When a base word ends with “y”, change the “y” to “I” when adding an ending, excepts endings that begin with “I”. For example – cry+es=cries cry+ing=crying

 

When a base word ends with a vowel followed by a “y”, do not change the ending when adding suffixes or endings (monkey + s=monkeys).

 

When a one-syllable word ends in one vowel followed by one consonant, double the consonant before adding an ending that begins with a vowel.

 

Add “s” to most words to form plurals or to change the tense of verbs.
Add “es” to words ending in “x”, “z”, “s”, “sh”, or “ch”.

 

When a word ends in silent “e”, drop the “e” when adding an ending that begins with a vowel (argue + ed + argued). When adding an ending that begins with a consonant, keep the silent “e”.

 

To make plurals of words that end in f or fe, usually change the f or fe to v and ad es (wife=wives).

The letter q is always followed by a u (quiet, quit).
