Meet the New Teachers

Superintendent Dr. Marty Semmel

The 2016-17 school year is off to a great start for Plymouth Public Schools. On August 31, 2016, staff welcomed over 1,500 students back for a new year. Members of the Board of Education and Central Office staff toured all four schools on the first day and were greeted with enthusiasm. Amongst the new faces were twelve new certified teachers. These teachers came together earlier in the summer to participate in new teacher orientation and were introduced to the policies, procedures and expectations of the Plymouth Public Schools. Dr. Semmel welcomed staff and shared how much he had enjoyed interviewing each teacher over the summer. One of the new hires is even a former student of his from Southington High School!

The district preschool program has moved over to Plymouth Center School and welcomed a new part time preschool teacher, Mrs. Shannon Cohan. Shannon has over thirteen years of experience working in preschool and is learning first-hand about child development with her own new addition at home!

Harry S. Fisher Elementary School has a new Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Kimberly Dumonski, on board, however Kim is not new to Terryville as she attended the schools here herself and worked in support positions at Fisher for the past two years while she finished her teaching certification. Two new special education teachers round out Fisher’s staff. Ms. Christina Potts and Mrs. Bethany Willard will be supporting students and look forward to becoming part of the community as they are enjoying the small town feel and collegiality thus far.

There are four new teachers at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School. The sixth grade team welcomes Ms. Samantha Baumgart and Mr. Michael Sadej as the reading and writing team. They are both enjoying getting to know all of the sixth graders and hoping to have time to continue their hobbies such as painting, writing, reading and hiking. Another addition to the English Arts team is the seventh grade writing teacher Mr. Matt Harris. He joins us with three years of teaching experience and a former career as an insurance claims manager. Mrs. Margo Parenti will be working with students in all grades at the middle school as the technology education teacher. She is excited to be introducing students to STEM concepts and working with older students after ten years of teaching at the elementary level.

Terryville High School also has four new classroom teachers. Ms. Kristin Steeves, a social studies teacher, is excited to help students see how they can make a difference in the world. She lives locally and loves the tight-knit community. Ms. Sarah Falcetti is the new addition to the English department and she is enjoying the themes in her classes that revolve around “what it means to be human.” Mr. Michael Cavalier spent his summer preparing the workshop for his technology education classes at the high school and hopes to continue to grow the program this year. Ms. Samia Issadi joins the foreign language department as the French teacher and speaks a handful of languages. She is also coming to us after a career in agricultural insurance.

One interesting fact is that all but one of our new hires completed their teacher training right here in Connecticut! They attended University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac, University of Bridgeport, University of Saint Joseph, Connecticut College and Eastern Connecticut State University. Please join us in wishing these teachers and all of our students a wonderful school year!
